Speech by the National President Dr Adefunke Ekine on the 27th of May 2024, in commemoration of Children’s Day.

Theme: Celebrating the Future: A Commitment to Our Children’s Growth and Well-being.

Dear OMEP Members,

It is with immense joy that I write this short piece to celebrate this year’s Children’s Day with the above theme. This special day, May 27th, is dedicated to honoring the bright and hopeful spirits of our young ones who hold the promise of a better tomorrow. In our country Nigeria as in different countries of the world we do observe the Children’s Day howbeit on different days.

I wish to emphasize our collective responsibility to nurture our children’s growth and ensure their well-being. Our children are the future leaders and innovators, and it is our duty to provide them with love, care, and support. As we all know, quality education is crucial. Every child deserves access to education that opens doors to endless possibilities. We must also focus on their holistic development—fostering creativity, encouraging physical activity, and nurturing emotional intelligence. Let us provide them with diverse opportunities to explore their talents and dreams.

Children’s Day reminds us of the resilience and courage of our children as many face challenges such as poverty, bullying, neglect, mental breakdown, and abuse. As a community, we must protect their rights and support them to lead happy and healthy lives.

Let us continue to build a world where every child can thrive and achieve their fullest potential as much as we are able. We should let them know that they are loved and cherished and that each and every one of them has limitless potential.

We should continue to celebrate their uniqueness and contributions not only on Children’s Day but always. Encourage them to never stop believing in themselves and to always strive for the best.

In addition, every child regardless of their background deserves to live in a world where his or her rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.

Let us all rise to give the child the good start in life that they need.

Happy Childrens Day!
